Landing craft?

After viewing the movie "Saving Private Ryan" I could not believe that
the stratagic military people of the time would not think of installing
some kind of heavy calibre macine gun on the landing crafts for cover
to give the soldiers a small fighting chance? If the movie is accurate
as portrayed, this was a turkey shoot as soon as the doors opened. Does
anyone have insight on this thought?
