Check out the part when Deitrich and Belloq lose Indy in Cairo after the desert chase. In the scene when Deitrich throws the melon at the dog, if you look close, you'll notice that Toht is a mannequin. Perhaps it was a reshoot and Ronald Lacey was not available?
