if you've got a real dark creepy interest (and we all know you do) and care to expand your paper beyond India's thugs to ritual killers in general, you could always discuss the (Arabian?) cult of hashshashin.
These guys were a secret order of Moslem fanatics who terrorized and killed Christian Crusaders during the, you guessed it, Crusades.
And a Fun-Fact: our word "assassin" comes, via French and Latin, from the Arabic name of their cult (hashshashin), which in turn comes from the drug they would smoke to get all psyched up fer killin' (hashish). I read someplace that the word also stems from the name of the group's leader, one "El-Hassen", but this may be more legend than fact.
