: Basically they were designed to be worn much higher up the body than Indy wore his. The string goes around your middle and winds round that disc thing on the other side to stop it swinging around when you are running from bombs and things.

The Gas mask that was used with these haversacks were designed to be worn on the chest , with the strap being worn around the neck ,the satchel would be opened up the mask fitted and the masks hose would run to the Box[filter inside satchel]the string would wrap around your back and wind around the metal disc which is riveted in place,please keep in mind that the flap was worn closed with the snaps chest side
