Don't forget the the original theatrical release of the Star Wars and Indy trilogies were pretty much concurrent. That takes a lot more work than a DVD does. I'd chalk it all up to timing for Spileberg more than anything else; his "back" catalogue is obviously now being released (despite all being Universal pictures, but we won't go there) which should create a demand for his (ahem) lesser known films like the Indy movies.

Of course it could also be marketing - what better way to get people reinterested in Indy than DVD releases, thus priming the way for Indy 4 in theatres.
