I'll tell you what you did wrong, you used nail polish remover. Acetone is the base ingredient of nail polish remover, but remover is not the same as pure acetone. Some nail polish removers are non-acetone; be sure you didn't use one of these. Go to any hardware store and invest the three bucks in a can of straight acetone. Just for the record:
2-Propanone,water,isopropyl alcohol,2-butanone,PEG-10 sorbitan laurate,fragrance,color: D&C red 245.
(The ingredients, verbatim, from a bottle my wife has sitting here.)
