VCD's use MPEG compression 1. DVD's use MPEG2 compression. Since the MPEG standards are backward compatible, some DVD players are able to play the VCDs. Now just because they play VCDs doesn't mean you're going to get DVD quality. In fact, I've heard (but not seen first hand) that VCD quality is substantially inferior to VHS, let alone DVD. If you want exact resolutions the discs run in, I don't know.
