I think the VCD's picture quality is pretty poor. I have several Chinese international student friends, and they have VCD players. The picture often gets blurry, or pixellated. I never payed attention to the sound, I was pretty turned off by the picture quality. But you are right, the are easily pirated and they are very cheap.
