You are correct, Micah, The VHS rereleases last year are superior in picture and sound quality to the VCDs.

Before the advent of DVDs, VCDs gained most of their popularity in Asia, with a limited market domestically. The picture quality is usually comparable to VHS tapes, though VCDs do not diminish after repeated viewings. VCDs were another "disc" alternative to the larger, clumbsier laserdisc (though laserdiscs are still far superior in quality to both VCDs and VHS).

I'd strongly avoid buying the VCDs. The VHS tapes are good enough until the DVD releases, which hopefully will be next year.
