In Reply to: This article would lead me to believe that the mineral, or chrome tanned is longer wearing than the veg tanned. I guess both methods have their advantages(nm) posted by Fedora on October 26, 2000 at 17:02:21:

Other sources say the opposite, while some attribute the longer wear to speculation due to the more pliable nature of the chrome-tanned leather. I guess the argument is that if the leather is less rigid, it will survive because of its flexibility? I'm not convinced that argument has merit. I'd speculate that the mineral agents would be more stable over longer periods then would be a veg-based agent, but maybe my chemistry is too rusty?

Regardless, I think the skin has most of the impact upon longevity, and from there one needs to evaluate the tanning method in relation to the environment the leather will be used. Chrome tanned for hotter and dryer climates? Veg tanned for more temperate and damp climates?

Cheers!
