light-beam booby trap in Raiders

i've been wondering about this for a while... what's the deal with the "beam of light" booby trap near the beginning of ROTL? Could anyone explain how a trap like that could be activated simply by someone passing through a ray of sunlight? Cool scene of course, but this has always made me wonder....
