...as David Morgan did indeed make whips braided over wire for stunts, so I believe your grandmother is right on the mark. He braided the 20 footer that was used in Zorro over a wire that the stunt man swung on at the very beginning of the movie. I wouldn't be a bit surprised that this was done for the IJ movies as well. : If you view the "Raiders" whip at Indygear, the HF signed whip, I don't believe it to be an actual leather whip. Look at the plaiting. It's raised and looks rather like the tread of a tire. After breaking two cheap whips as a kid trying to swing from them my Grand mother said,"His was probably braided around a wire or a cable and was made so for that reason". I've spent my life entertaining that thought. Looking at that whip I wonder if maybe it isn't really a cast piece, perhaps of a heavy rubber or something with some kind of internal support as my Grandmother suggested. I know this sounds odd, but I've owned several whips over my life, some that I've beat to Hell, and I've never seen one do that, not even from shrinkage due to getting wet. I'd like to know what anyonf thinks of this notion.
