Question (NOT HOPPING ON BLOOPER TRAIN) about shooting one's own plane

Ahem. Not to pour gas on the "blooper/inconsistency vs.
suspension of disbelief" debate, but can anyone out there shed
light on the "idiot-proofing" engineered into military aircraft?

I'm talking about interruptor plates to keep someone (I won't
name names, but his initials are Henry Jones Sr.) from crippling
his own aircraft. Or timing devices (belts?) that allow cannon fire
through props and such. Those are examples from the 30s and
40s - feel free to offer stuff about current fighters, too. Anyone?

Thanks,

Tim
