Try BDU trousers (that's Battle Dress Uniform) in slate grey or khaki. You may remove the side cargo pockets (I did that on one pair). They have reinforced knees and are very comfortable. Besides, they're not wool, so you can put them in the washing mashine. IMHO, they're a cool, contemporary substitute. One place to get hold of them is uscav.com.
