As for the casual spider-man fan, I know people who lived off of just the cartoons that know about "puny parker" and how spider-man was once a nerd. That's one of spidey's appealing traits, the fact he is in essence a "human" super hero, one that isn't supposed to have lots of gagets or be perfect.
