I'd like to preface this post by saying that it's all just my well-informed opinion (rolls eyes). I figure they met roughly ten years before Raiders, when Indy was either a student or a teaching assistant with Abner Ravenwood. Indy had an affair with Abner's teenage daughter, and Abner found out. In one fell swoop, Indy destroyed the relationship he had with his surrogate father figure (Abner) and the woman he loved (Marion). Anybody else care to hazard a guess?
