One of the paths that you follow to the candles branches out in a Y shape around a big mountain, the left path is usually the one that gets missed. You really have to paddle hard to the left and be looking for that split in the river, otherwise the water will just push you past it without notice.

Just to let you know, since you're only at the river level- the game hasn't even begun to get difficult yet. You will honestly feel like you've accomplished something when you finish the game, because it'll put some serious strain on your brain.
