I think the problem is that there are many 16 mm prints of "Raiders" floating around, getting run through different dirty projectors and before you know it they look like garbage...
I'm not so sure this was allowed to happen with "Star Wars..." I think Lucasfilm kept a pretty tight lease on any prints.

Maybe what you could do is suggest to the theatre owner(s) that if they are going to show "classic" movies then they should either clean their equipment, clean their prints or show them for free.

I saw a god-awful print of "Raiders" about 2 years ago and my experience was the same as yours...but it was still sweet to see it on the "big" screen huh?
