They immerse the hat in stiffener before making any of the cuts or putting ribbon, bands, and liner on. They're all based on rabbit fur, which I personally prefer - based on my novice knowledge of durability, shrinkage, and especially PRICE.

On mine? I've begun to mold the brim, kinda working in my hands. It will relax over time, though I like the stiffness.
