Some stuff I figured out. The 'Cairo' hat had a slight crown bulge above the ribbon, squared off top and the pinch was crooked. The pinch also goes all the way down into the ribbon, and the ribbon follows the shape. Also, the front of the brim had a slight bow to it, right in the middle. Also, the very edge of the brim in front was curled slightly up. Over all, it just looks misshapen and well worn in. Now, take your fedora and stretch it slightly with your hands from front to back. It takes on that basic shape, in regards to the crown bulge and the bow of the brim. How do you get this look? Most people's heads are slightly oval, and hats are made to comply to this. Ask Joe jr. to make your hat slightly shorter front to back and slightly wider side to side. When it's off your head it will be more round than oval, but your head will stretch into the shape I described above. your head will stretch the shorter front/back dimension outward, thus affecting the crown and the front of the brim. The reason for making it wider side to side is that when it stretches front to rear the sides will pull in, making it conform to the oval shape of your head. The variance must be the same. Example: 1/2" shorter front to rear, 1/2" wider side to side. This means it will stretch out 1/4" front to rear and pull in 1/4" on each side. Everyone with me? The curl on the brim's edge can be done with your fingers, no steam required. Next is the pich. Steam and steam all you want, you'll never get the pinch that tight that far down. Just above the ribbon, put a stitch through the crown and pull the pinch in consistent with the top. Before you do this be sure to pull the lining away from the hat so you don't sew it to the hat. You'll have to use pliers to pull the needle through both sides of the pinch. To get the squared-off look to the crown just steam it a bit and pinch it up higher, taking away the heart-shape. To complete the look throw some light colored dirt on the hat and let it settle in around the top and bottom of the ribbon.
