To start it off, all three IJ films were filmed on 35mm. They did not utilize widescreen lenses (lenses that morph and squeeze the image to fit a 35mm print). Rather, the top and bottom of the frame are matted out from the picture using letterboxes, resulting in a widescreen format. IJ was made in this format and was transferred to pan & scan with the top and bottom of the frame restored (simply got rid of the black letterboxes), seeing more on the top and bottom on video than you do in widescreen. Whoever does the widescreen to pan & scan transfers usually takes more of the bottom, since there is a boom mike at the top (explaining your wine glass in Titanic, Shawnkara).

Many films today use a process called Super 35... well explained in the link.

Widescreen is the correct format... the way the filmmakers wanted you to see the film.
