Here's info from the "Making of Leather" (sounds like the title of one of those 1950s Disney documentaries!) section of the "This Olde Hide House" leather info website:
In 1995, total world leather production was approximately 7,000,000 metric tons of cowhide; 1,400,000 metric tons of lambskin, shearling, sheepskin; 800,000 metric tons of pigskin and 450,000 metric tons of goatskins.
Imagine all those skins used for one garment:
THE WORLD'S LARGEST INDY JACKET!

Hm, could I have one in sharkskin?
