I appreciate the Director's efforts, although I remain uncomfortable with the notion of bargaining with institutionalized terrorists like the Taliban.
Unfortunately, international condemnation of the Taliban plan may inspire more of this kind of bargaining, resulting in the Taliban's being accorded some kind of political legitimacy, when, in reality, their claims to power are based on brutal force, terrorist violence, and intolerant intimidation.
Their actions over the past couple of years have become increasingly horrifying, and this current vandalism reprises nothing less than the activities of the Nazis, Stalin, Khmer Rouge, Mao, and other sociopaths.
The Taliban insults the traditions of Islam, the Afgan people, and the spirit of the Mujahadeen by its actions.
Note to any who would suggest that cultural differences should be respected in this case, and that the Taliban should be accorded the right to "do their own thing". Cultural relativism does not extend towards ignoring (and thus implicitly supporting) the kind of brutal pig-headed violence that the Taliban endorses.
This is a situation where there really IS a clear "right" and "wrong".
And the Taliban is an illegitimate substitute for a political body and poses nothing less than a continuing threat to the people of Afganistan and their neighbors.
To keep this Indy-related, maybe someone could suggest a nice, shiny gold Grail for the Taliban to drink from, or suggest that they peek inside the Ark...
