Maybe he'd try to snatch a piece that could fetch a nice price. Indy doesn't have many qualms about the destruction of artifacts. Remember the (fake) vase? Remember the damage to the Well of Souls?
Indy is a fortune hunter more than anything else. That's how I see this.

: I've been following this story, and it really pisses me off. So what do you think Indy would do in this situation? Would he do like the ark, and steal the huge statues, stash them in a truck, and save them? Would he chain himself to the statues, saying they'll have to get through him first? Or maybe he'd threaten to blow up something of the Taliban's, unless they cease destruction of the Buddhist statues? It's kind of fun to speculate what one person could do to save 'em...
