I walked away from the computer after that reponse to you, and it hit me "You DOPE, THAT wasn't what he was asking!" sorry about that! Actually, they probably had very little except what may have been available at their local hat stores, as each town had one or two shops that catered to men and their toppers. Hats were a standard item for men, and so the prices were no where near what we deal with today, as it's not considered a standard item of common apparel for us anymore. Back then, though, they changed hats like socks, and so it's MUCH more likely that the real Indy would have worn a hat to total destruction, then just replaced it. In normal wear, he probably had it serviced either weekly or monthly by his local hat shop (reblocked, cleaned and the like), but I'd be more in the belief that he just replaced it as needed. Just my opinion, but one based on your ACTUAL question. (grins) Sorry about that! Regards. Michaelson

: In real life, Harrison Ford WAS handed a new hat, probably every other scene or so...

: But in the PRETEND world of Indy...IE the 30's....how could someone keep their hat from shrinking?

: BTW, way to make me sound like a total dork (GRINS WIDE) hee hee

: Later pal!

: : The custume folks just kept handing him another one when the one he was using went "South". There were many more than just ONE fedora used in the filming. Simple as that. Regards. Michaelson

: : : How did Indy keep his hat fitting so well?

: : : I mean, was there such a thing as Scotch Guard (or the like) in the thirties? His hat saw the worst of some of the most extreme conditions, and yet he had no problem with shrinkage....well, insofar as the world of the movies is concerned, his hat always seemed to stay relatively the same size.

: : : I mayself, in my LC Fred Meyer Indy special, have not had this problem...and I was once pushed into a swimming pool while wearing it.

: : : It DID, however, turn a greenish tone across the top and the pinch when I let it dry in the sun.

: : : Any thoughts??

: : : : I just received an email from Ron at HatsDirect, in response to an inquiry I made of him regarding the apparent lack of shrinkage that the Akrubra fedora seems to enjoy. We've all read, and probably experienced, the disappointment of our fedora's shrinking after a heavy soaking, especially if no pre-preparation has been made to keep it from doing so, such as Scotch Gard or the like. Ron tells me that Akrubra is one of the few companies that actually MAKES their own felt. Very few hat makers can make this claim. Before blocking any hat, they run the felt through a pre-shrink cycle anywhere from 12 to 14 times before making a hat. Most all other makers only pre-shrink 2-4 cycles before blocking a hat. This way the Akrubra is much more stable than others, and though there may be a very little shrinkage with a soaking, it will not experience the HUGE reduction in sizing a lot of us have experienced at one time or another. The company is now in the hands of the 5th generation of owners (the same family) and they are dedicated to producing the best fur felt hat one can purchase. Anyway, with the new Indy styled Campdraft on it's way, I thought this tid bit of info would be interesting, especially after the discussions of recent past on watching our Millers or HJ's shrink a size or two after a rain storm, apparently we won't experience this with an Akrubra.
