Indiana Jones and Zorro, similarities

Several weeks ago I was watching an A&E Biography on Zorro and the old Zorro movies. In one of them, Zorro went under a carriage the same way Indy did, and also used the whip for many of the same things Indy used it for. Was this the inspiration for Indy's whip? Any responses would be greatly appreciated.
