Most historians believe the cup would have been made of turned wood, probably polished with beeswax, maybe olivewood or Lebanese pine. This assumes that their host was rather wealthy, otherwise the cups would have been made of thrown clay, possibly fired in a communal kiln.
It probably was shaped more like a modern soup bowl then a chalice or a goblet. Finally, chances are that Christ was drinking from a vessel similar if not identical to what his disciples were drinking from, as they were all guests at a private home.
As to the Grail in the movie, I assumed at first glance it was ceramic, especially considering the sound it made as Indy retrieved from the stone ledge. I assumed the gold glint was intended to indicate a spiritual power in the artifact.
