Big strings and high action

I read that he used bigger high E strings than that. I also read that he de-tuned his guitars AT LEAST half a step, which would make it considerably easier to make those bends, due to lower string tension. Of course, bigger strings make for a fatter sound and better sustain, while lower string tension allows the harmonics in the note to stand out more. Lots of practice, taste and talent help considerably, too.
