You dont need to shrink your fedora to get it to fit your head. By steaming it that way it might just shrink too tighyly or the color may come off, leaving ur nice sable indy hat a much much lighter brown then before...trust me this has happened to me before!
Just take weather stripping-a foamy like thing that will go in ur hat.

or...just use paper towels and with both these materials but them inside the sweatband.
