Yes, his cameo in the film was due in no small part to the fact that his wife Melissa Mathisson helped write the screenplay for E.T. and the fact that Spielberg and Ford already had a positive relationship. It's rumored that this scene will be restored to the film in the upcoming re-release Special Edition in 2002. Don't count on it, but it might actually happen...
