: : : Greetings. I'm Jake, and Indy is the man. RAIDERS is the movie that epitomizes my kidhood, and it's one of the handful of films that I can recite ver batum.
: : : However, has anyone else noticed that in the scene with the German flying wing that was intended to take the Ark to Berlin (right after the escape from the Well of the Souls), Indy began to climb onto the plane; apparently to kick the butt of the pilot who was busy with the controls, a mechanic in a green shirt, cap and with a monkey wrench in his hand started shouting up to Indy (I read in a book somewhere that he was shouting "You! Kid! What do you think you're doing?!" in German, or something like that). We all remember that? Okay, well-- the pilot didn't hear him. Indy proceeds to deck the mechanic, only to have the economy-sized, shirtless bald nazi enter from stage right.
: : : My question is, the big dude wasn't shouting when he called to Indy, who was going for "Beating up the Pilot, Take II." Yet the pilot heard the normal tone of voice, and turned around with a pistol.
: : : What happened?
: : : Does anyone have a good answer, besides perhaps the boom mike was having a problem, or that the musical score was softer here and there?
: : : Thanks!

: : Selective hearing? (grins) Other than the obvious "it's in the script", I guess the best "explaination" would be the angle from which the two Germans came from in relationship to the revolving pusher props of the plane. From the rear of the plane, maybe the pilot couldn't hear the man yell, but from the angle the bald German came from, specifically more to the side, the frequency of his voice was at a level over the revolving prop that the pilot COULD hear him. All conjecture, though. Regards. Michaelson

:
: That pilot couldn't hear anything at all. He didn't even hear when the wrench hit the propeller! The guy is just a bit slow. When Indy climbed on the wing, the plane probably bounced a bit. The pilot was a bit busy with flight preparations at that time and took a few seconds to look over his shoulder to see what was going on. This coincides with the bark of baldy. I have proof that the pilot's not the sharpest: Notice how long it takes him to find his sissy-pistol in the cockpit? He's also too clumsy to find a better vantage point for shooting Indy.
: All in all, this makes for a great action-driven scene, not more, not less.
: FG
: PS: Maybe the blinding desert sunlight bounced of the German mechanic's bald head and alerted the pilot? ;)

...more than the pilot not hearing the yelling, and that was the wrench hitting the prop and the pilot not noticing, unless that was a normal sound for a German flying wing! (grins) Regards. Michaelson
