I live in the San Francisco Bay Area - It's a sunny hot day- If I go for a drive around town, I will see kids wearing baseball hats and a few adults wearing straw sun-hats. If I go to the beach I will see straw hats. If I want to see someone wearing a felt hat, I'd probably have to find some 90 year old guy who got in the habit in the 40's, being driven around by his wife in a 68 Chrysler. I could drive into the hills above Santa Cruz where there might be an old hippie, like Neil Young, with a felt hat with a turkey feather in it. A felt hat is a SPONGE for dirt and sweat, that can't be thrown in the wash like a baseball cap.
