I think hats were on the way out anyway, JFK was just following the trend.
The Beatles sure didn't wear hats, and that coming generation (the boomers)
certainly wasn't about to wear anything their parents had worn. I have a Life
magazine from 1937 that remarks about how in America at the time, the further
west you go, the fewer hats you see on college students, until they all but
vanish in California. So I think the demise of the hat was inevitable and
I don't blame JFK specifically. It's never that simple.
