: OK, so I want to stiffen my hat's brim more, so Fedora mentioned
: I should go to my local "western apparel" store, but I happen to
: live in New York, and I don't think there is such a store here. At
: least, it'll be hard to find. Does anyone know what I can use that's
: available locally, or do I have to order this Scout stuff off the
: internet and wait around for it to arrive?

: I don't want to use hairspray or anything that might ruin the hat.
: By the way, I called my local hat store and they said they don't
: recommend putting any spray on it because it might ruin the felt.
: They said I should take it to a professional but I don't want to do
: that because it will cost too much, and they use heat which will
: shrink the felt.

: All serious input appreciated.

: Cheers,

I think your best bet would be to order some. If you don't want to go that route, just get some unscented extra hold hair spray and apply to both sides of the brim just like you would apply it to your hair, rub it in with your fingers, and shape the brim while it is still wet. I used to use hair spray a few years ago, and if used only once, it is safe. You might want to test it on a small area to make sure the dye or powder doesn't fade before treating the entire brim. I prefer hat stiffener because you let it dry, and then lightly steam and shape. I don't know if the hair spray will perform as well with this method. Hope this helps. Regards, Fedora
