I don't think it's more dangerous than a modern gas tank of a car. Those things have caps that are sealed in order to prevent air pollution. Only if the pressure rises above a certain point, some of the fumes ar5e allowed to escape via a pressure valve.
The seal on the lighter will most likely not be 100% tight. Also, the wick allows some of the fumes to escape, especially if pressure builds up.
