: It just occured to me, will DVD's be Universally compadible? I mean... I know that NTSC, Pal and Secam are different standards (although Pal and Secam have similarities) but will the encoding on the DVD be the same, with the player itself sending the respective NTSC, Pal and Secam signals?

Unfortunately not. The movie industry's will was followed, and the DVD players and discs are area encoded (don't know what the right term for it is). This means that the world is divided into 6 territories, and DVD discs bought from a different territory won't play in other territories' players. This was done because you could otherwise buy a movie on DVD (from the USA, for instance) before it has even come to the theatres in your country.

This REALLY sucks IMHO!
