: : : Now that we are all entering the warmer months of the year, I am
: : : a little worried about what it will do to our trusty (and sometimes
: : : expensive)fedoras. I wore my fed yesterday and was sweating
: : : like a leaky faucet. Also the hot sun was on it all day. Will the hot
: : : sun affect color, shrinkage, etc.? Anyone know?

: : : Bueller?

: : : Bueller?

: : : OK, I'm a little bored here..

: : Michaelson got me to wearing the felt fedoras in the summer, but if I am doing a strenous activity outside here in the deep south, I switch to a straw panama styled hat. But I am a heavy sweater, more so than most folks. The sun will fade felt or anything else with enough exposure. In the case of a darker hat like the Federation, this is beneficial. I plan on giving mine plenty of the sunlight this summer. If your fedora gets good and wet and then you go out in the hot sun, you can expect some shrinkage. Under ordinary conditions, you should have no problem with shrinkage during hot weather. Regards, Fedora

You'll find yourself having a bit more maintenance done to your hat over time, such as ribbon and liner replacement, but it also depends on what kind of sweatband is in your fedora. If it's leather, it breathes more and you can just wipe it out. If it's cloth, then the maintenance comment comes more into effect. My Bushman has vent holes, so that relieves most of the heat problem, but it's not all that often that I find the need to NOT wear my felt, and I live in the deep South too. Regards. Michaelson
