They also state that a film about Lawrence made today would not have such an idealistic and heroic portrayal, but that they feel it should be accepted in an epic such as Lean's film.

: Don't know about the book, but these comments seem to suggest that the O'Toole Lawrence is not too accurate.

That would seem to indicate that the portrayal was more glowing than reality. My impression from the movie was that he was quite the eccentric and a bit of a nut even before any horrific things happened to him. Even riding a motorbike he seemed a bit maniacal. Maybe he was like that... I'd like to know...
