I'm glad you brought this point up. The scene where he is whipped with his own whip in a way sums up the whole movie. Betrayal seems to be an underlying theme. Though not by his fault, Indy betrays Shorty, Willie, and himself while under the "dark sleep", the children from the village are enslaved by their own countrymen....etc.

Some people like to write Mola Ram off as a weak villian. As my cousin once said; "Weak!? He rips people's hearts out!" I never thought Mola was supposed to be on Indy's level in an advesarial sense. He's more of the brutal, gone off the deep end type....hehe.
I've said it before, which of the Indy villians would you least like to encounter in a dark alley?
