Maybe it's a symbol for the serial in general? The hero gets into a dangerous situation and he gets out of it. Over and over and over; just like the spinning plane?

A hint: The scene that refers to The Odyssey is in O Brother, sort of.

PS: I'm more of a fan of The Illiad myself. It's more intense. I guess that's why most readers prefer the wry Odyssey.
