The Scream series had a really tight plot line that interlaced back and forth between the 3 movies, probably better than any other murder mystery out there- even Hitchcock would have probably given it two thumbs up.

That's one of the reasons why it became the highest grossing horror movie franchise ever(unless you consider Jaws to be horror movie).
