Caiden probably got the job because he was cheap and had some credits to his name. He'd written quite a few sci-fi novels, mostly with a military bent I believe. Obviously Lucasfilms wasn't terribly picky.

Unfortunately, I think Caiden was just too old to be very familiar or enamored with the Indy character. I read in one of the book trade journals that he passed away last month around the age of 80 or so.
