I cut the sides to 2 5/8 using Patterson's technique on Indygear (with a bit of an explanation and clarification from Fedora). For this all I used was some tailor's chalk, a razor blade, and my girlfriend's sanding sponge which she uses to sand her fingernails. The brim was 2 3/4 all around so I didn't have to touch the front and back.

From there I cut off the old ribbon with a razor blade, and sewed on the new black one.

Then it was just some cold water and a very little steam, a very little shaping, a very little steam, a very little shaping, and so on until I got "the look".

I let the hat sit on my head while it dried and I watched Raiders. Then I put it in its box overnight and Voila!

By the way, when it arrived it was a tiny bit too big, but I never had to do Fedora's lampshade trick because after the reshaping and some wear, it molded to my head fine.

Hope this helped.
