Regarding FDR, since I was never actually around in 1936 and all I know is what the history books and my repeated visits to the FDR memorial in DC tell us, all I can really say that irks me about the Chief (and I'd give anything to believe that it wasn't true) is that we have reason to believe that he KNEW Pearl Harbor Day was imminent, and did zip about it (save for ordering three carriers to leave port for a little while).

At any rate, 1936 was a pretty rough time. I guess that's why anyone who happened to be there tends to look sort of elderly.
