Nice job on realizing that the old U-Boats did much better on the surface than under, and that even in a dive, the sub wouldn't go too far down. Thus, Indy managed to stay in the realm of possibility this time. (What still puzzles me is how Indy managed to swim from the Bantu Wind to the sub and still have parts of his shirt stay dry. Check it out when he climbs aboard.)
However, it's only fair to point out that in 1936, the Med was crawling with British Royal Navy vessels and although the war had yet to really get going, the Brits and the Nazis weren't exactly the best of pals, and maybe it would have been better for the sub to just stay the hell out of sight, anyway.
Another point on the same line is that Egypt was under British control at the time, and point A--no Nazi archeological dig would have been going on, and B--the fight in the streets of Cairo would have probably had a few dozen English cops in the party to quell the little bruha.
But what kind of movie would we have then?
Let's be careful out there.
