A bit more about the sub in Raiders.

1. The sub itself is a bit fishy. It's a Type VII which was introduced
in '36. Indy would have more likely encountered a Type II sub at that
time.

2. German submarines did not have snorkels at that time. When
submerged, they had to run on electric motors. Only towards the end of
the war were snorkels fitted. Then submarines could run their diesel
engines at periscope depth. But that was not the case in '36.

3. Snorkels have a larger diameter than the "straw" we can see on the
photo in which Indy hangs on to the "snorkel/periscope". It really
looks more like a periscope...

This picture shows a later Type VIIC sub (1940). As you can see the
conning tower looks different from the sub in Raiders (and Das Boot).
The snorkel (#12) is substantially bigger than the periscope (#11).
