I think that what you're seeing is the markings Bellyache (with all the contraversy in spelling, I'll give him a more fitting name) and his helpers made on the site they thought the Well of the Souls was to be found. Don't forget, they were down there themselves three days ago (four, or maybe even five days later) taking their calculations. There also seems to be red cord around some of the tiny buildings, also. I'm sure it was also part of their equation, and makes perfect sense to them.
Their careless use of paint markings suggests that the Tanis map room was not intended to be a future tourist point of interest.
Let's be careful out there.
