Any non-abrasive dishwashing liquid (such as SpicnSpan) would be a good start. If that doesn't work, try very very weak HCL (I'd avoid the aqua regia).
Try the book below, or many simmilar types (e.g. Kovel's) for info on maker's marks, etc.:
Lehner's Encyclopedia of U.S. Marks on Pottery, Porcelain & Clay by Lois Lehner. A total of 634 pages covering 8,000 marks, copyright 1988 by Collector Books. There are brief summaries of the various makers whose marks are displayed and information on various artists that signed their works in Pottery, Porcelain and Clay. The book has much factual data of interest...
Ah, so this is where all that training has led. Next I suppose I'll hang out at the flea markets hawking fake arrowheads...
