In 1964 Ford had a job repairing clocks at Bullock's department store and while driving to work in his volvo through Hollywood, California's Laurel Canyon he looked down to fasten his seatbelt and he hit a telephone pole and his chin the steering wheel. Due to no medical insurance he had to settle for a quick stitch job at the emergency room leaving him with his trademarked scar.
