I'd give anything to believe that we didn't know Pearl was coming, so I'll give FDR the benefit of the doubt.
There is a story that the first shots of Pearl were actually fired by Americans, when a US ship fired upon and destroyed a Japanese submarine sent on prior to the attack, 30 minutes beforehand.
Why the ship decided not to alert Pearl as to what had happened, and maybe given the guys back on the homestead a chance to get ready is a real mystery.
Let's be careful out there.
